Moving Overseas - overcome cultural shock!

The age which we live in is the jet age. The airfares are getting cheaper and many companies are building sites in more than one country. For expansion of business activities, many companies send their employees for training or jobs abroad from site to site. Since the world has become a global village, it is a frequent occurrence for people to relocate overseas.

There are people who move for a couple of months, some for some years and there are others who have to shift their base permanently. Since everything and everyone is literally on the move, moving overseas is one of the best business areas for moving companies. In a move (pun unintended) to attract customers, a lot of moving companies have begun offering competitive rates as well.

Anyone who has lived, traveled or studied extensively abroad would vouch for an unmistakable phenomenon in their lives-cultural shock. What is cultural shock exactly? The Oxford Dictionary online states culture shock as disorientation experienced when suddenly subjected to an unfamiliar culture or way of life. The weather, the language, the food, the sense of clothing, landscape, modes of transportation, communication, values, customs and traditions would be different from the ones you are used to.

The day breaks differently. The stores open at odd times. How do you talk with the bus conductor and tell that you haven’t got a change? The place has a different set of smell and tastes that you cannot relate to. You lose track of your way along the road, and when you communicate the same to a local, he seems to have lost you. Heck, neither can they understand your money nor can you make out the permutations and combinations in their modes of currency. People either glare at you, stare at you like you are an alien or get awed by you. Some of them get entertained by your presence. It is so funny. It is so embarrassing. It is so unnerving. Welcome to cultural shock!

When you arrive at a place for the first time, everything feels new. Everything looks exciting. You are visually stimulated and interested to know more. You just take in the glimpse of the differences between your country and the place you have moved to. After some time, you find the exciting things growing mundane. Soon there comes a time when you begin to get home-sick. You start comparing and start belittling the culture, the food and everything in between, of the country you have to move to, with your home town. You get prejudiced towards the new culture. All said, and done, this is normal. This is a period when you are adjusting and starting to live with a new set of cultures and ideologies. It happens with everybody. With some, this may be more and with some the mental conflicts could be less and far in between. Nevertheless, it happens with everybody to some extent.

Over a period of time, you understand the value of adjusting and compromising. You find ways and means to communicate with the locals. You begin to learn their language; you understand that people are the same everywhere with the same emotions, pains and pleasure in life though their reaction to circumstances could be different. You come to know that every place is unique and has some good points about it. You start to accept the differences and gradually begin to identify the variety in life. You begin to cope with the problems and get confident with the new environment. You are no longer lonely and you have got over the cultural shock. You start to see things through a higher plane, through a new light. You love the differences and you appreciate the similarities in both the cultures. You reminisce the day you moved to this new place, your new home.

The best means by which you could overcome the cultural shock is by developing a friendly attitude towards everyone. Take a language class, start mixing with the locals and join a sports-club or volunteer in a social service or church services. In fact you could start the day you move to the new place.
